Bread in a Bag: Your little ones can become a baker with this simple recipe

Making bread in a bag is a way for your children to combine ingredients and create something with little help from adults. The ingredients are simple to find and the measurements are easy. It’s also a really fun activity. Who doesn’t love getting their hands wrist-deep in squishy dough? Your kiddos will also feel very accomplished when their bread comes out of the oven, and this is something that the whole family can enjoy.

• 3 cups all purpose flour

• 3 tbsp white sugar

• 1 (.25 oz) package od rapid rise yeast

• 1 cup of warm water

• 3 Tbsp olive oil

• 1 1/2 tsp salt

• Mini loaf pans

• Large resealable bag

• Place 1 cup of flour, sugar, yeast and warm water in a large resealable plastic bag.

• Squeeze air out of the bag and seal.

• Squish with hands until well mixed

• Let mixture rest in bag for 10 minutes, bubbles will form.

• Add 1 cup of flour, oil and salt to the mixture.

• Seal bag and squish until well mixed.

• Add last cup of flower to mixture and continue mixing until well blended.

• Remove dough from bag, dust surface with flour and knead for 5-10 minutes until smooth.

• Divide dough in two and place each half in greased mini loaf pan.

• Cover pans with towel and sit for 30 minutes for bread to rise.

• Bake at 375º for 25-30 minutes, or until bread is golden brown.

• This is a great project where your kiddos can measure the ingredient themselves, but if they are too young to understand measurements you can separate the ingredients with exact measurements into their own containers so they can pour everything in themselves. This allows the little ones to do most of the work even if they do not know how to measure out the ingredients.

• Keep extra flour on hand for when you knead the bread. It will be sticky at first, so make sure those little hands have plenty of flour on them to prevent a mess.

• Like most things that involved children, this project can be messy. Be prepared to sweep flour off the floor because it spreads so fast.
